The situation

A family home in San Francisco with wall-to-wall carpet through the living areas, the hallway and a full staircase. Nobody had cleaned it in years, and it showed the way carpet always shows it: not as stains, but as a slow, even greying that creeps outward from the doorways. The staircase was the worst of it — every step had a dark band right where feet land, and the edges had gone almost black.

What we did

A whole-house job is a sequencing problem. You clean toward the exit, you never walk back over what you just did, and the stairs go last so nobody has to cross them wet.

Move what moves, protect what doesn't. Furniture repositioned, corners and baseboards protected before any water came out.
Deep dry vacuuming, room by room. This is the step that actually saves the carpet. The grit ground into the base of the pile is abrasive — it cuts fibers every time someone walks on it. Pulling it out dry is what extends the carpet's life.
Traffic-lane pre-spray. Doorways, hallway and the walking path got a stronger pre-treatment and full dwell time, because that is where the soil concentrates.
Hot water extraction with overlapping passes. Our professional dual-motor extractor, working in sections so no strip was missed and no area got double-wetted.
Stairs by hand. Each tread and riser done individually with a hand tool. Stairs collect more soil per square foot than any other surface in a house, and they cannot be rushed with a wand.
Grooming and airflow. Pile groomed in one direction, air moving, dry within 6 to 8 hours.

The result

The traffic paths disappeared and the carpet went back to one even tone from wall to wall. The staircase was the moment that got the reaction — the dark bands came off the treads completely, and with the pile groomed back up the stairs read as new rather than worn out. The whole house was walkable the same evening.
