Three Sofas, One Afternoon, San Francisco

After. The texture is the tell — the weave reads as fabric again rather than as a flat surface.

In short: Three pieces in one San Francisco home: a charcoal sectional and two lighter sofas. Dark upholstery conceals soil rather than resisting it, so the job is judged by texture and smell rather than by colour change.

The situation

A charcoal sectional in the main living room, a white sofa in a second room and a cream sofa under the television. The owner booked because of the white one. The sectional was the piece that actually needed it.

Dark fabric does not show soil, which is exactly the problem. Nothing looks wrong, so nothing gets cleaned, and the fabric slowly stiffens as oils build up in the weave. You notice it by hand before you notice it by eye.

What we did

The result

The sectional came out noticeably softer to the touch — the weave moves again instead of feeling like a board. The two lighter sofas came up a clear shade brighter, and the faint stale smell in the main room was gone by the time we packed up.

Three pieces took one afternoon. Dry by evening.

Questions people ask about this job

How do you know if a dark sofa needs cleaning?

Run the back of your hand across the seat and then across a hidden panel, such as the outside back. If the seat feels stiffer or slightly tacky compared with the hidden panel, that is oil and soil in the weave. Dark fabric will not show it visually until it is severe.

Does upholstery cleaning remove smells?

Usually, yes, because most upholstery smell comes from the same oils and organic soil that cleaning removes. Odour coming from the foam core, from pets or from a spill that soaked through, needs the cushion covers off and the core treated separately.

How much does it cost to clean a sectional in San Francisco?

Most sectionals fall between $150 and $250 depending on the number of seats, with each additional seat priced individually. Cleaning several pieces in the same visit lowers the price per piece.
