The situation
A Palo Alto living room with a matching light beige set — sofa, armchair and a pile of decorative cushions on hardwood floors. The owner originally asked us to clean just the sofa, since that is what gets used. We suggested doing the whole set, and there is a practical reason for that: matching upholstery ages together, so when you clean one piece and leave the other, the difference is immediate and permanent-looking. The armchair that seemed fine on its own suddenly reads as the dirty one.
What we did
Cleaning a set together is the same process repeated with consistency — that consistency is the entire point.
- Floor protection down first. Hardwood and moisture do not mix, so sheeting goes down before any equipment comes in.
- Vacuum every piece and every cushion. Including the decorative cushions, which collect far more dust than anyone expects.
- Fabric test and matched pre-treatment. Same chemistry, same dwell time on both the sofa and the armchair, so both come out to the same tone.
- Hot water extraction across the set. Sofa, armchair and cushions all cleaned in one visit with the same dual-motor extractor and the same technique.
- Groom and dry. Nap groomed in one direction across every piece, airflow set up, dry within 6 to 8 hours.
The result
One even, consistent beige across the whole set instead of one refreshed piece sitting next to a tired one. The decorative cushions came out noticeably brighter — they are almost never cleaned, so they are usually holding the most dust in the room.
