Sofa and Area Rug Cleaning in Sunnyvale: Doing Both at Once

The situation

A cream sofa in a bright bay-window corner of a Sunnyvale living room, sitting on a textured grey area rug. The original request was the sofa only. Standing in the room, the rug was clearly carrying more soil than the sofa was — which is normal, since a rug takes shoes and a sofa does not. Cleaning the sofa alone would have made the rug look considerably worse by comparison.

What we did

Two items in the same sightline should be cleaned together. It is also cheaper, because the setup only happens once:

• Sofa moved clear of the rug. Both pieces need to be worked on independently, and the rug cannot be done properly with furniture standing on it.
• Hardwood protected under the full rug footprint. Sheeting down before anything started.
• Both dye tested. Cream upholstery and a grey textured rug are different fibres and different dye systems.
• Heavy dry vacuum on the rug. A textured weave traps grit at the base of the pile, and that has to come out before wet cleaning or it just turns to slurry.
• Sofa cleaned with controlled moisture. Cushions off, seams detailed, contact points pre-treated, light chemistry on light fabric.
• Rug extracted and groomed, then dried separately. The rug was given its own airflow, since it holds moisture longer than the sofa does.

The result

The corner reads as one clean space rather than a fresh sofa on a tired rug. The grey rug gained the most, because rugs almost always do — they take the shoes, the spills and the traffic that furniture never sees. The whole job was one setup and one visit, which is why two items together costs meaningfully less than two items on two days.
