The situation
A classic San Francisco living room — bay windows, hardwood floors, plants — with a large charcoal fabric sectional and chaise filling one side of it. The owner's assessment was that it was probably fine and just needed a refresh. The chaise said otherwise. On every sectional we clean, the chaise is the dirtiest section by a wide margin: it is where people lie down rather than sit, so it collects hair oils, skin contact along its full length, and feet at the far end.
What we did
Dark fabric hides soil so effectively that the honest measure of the job is the recovery tank, not the before-and-after photo.
- De-lint and dry vacuum. Every cushion face, the crevices, the back panels and the full length of the chaise.
- Colorfastness test. Charcoal dyes can bleed, so a hidden area gets tested before any chemistry goes on.
- Zone pre-treatment. The chaise, the headrests and the armrests got a degreasing pre-spray with proper dwell time — these carry the body oils.
- Hot water extraction, section by section. Each module cleaned separately with overlapping passes, so the finish is identical across the whole piece.
- Grooming and airflow. Fabric groomed in one direction, dry within 6 to 8 hours.
The result
The slick, matted feel on the chaise and headrests came out, the fabric got its texture back, and the room lost the faint stale note that trapped oils give off. The owner's reaction was the standard one for dark upholstery: genuine surprise at what came out of a couch that looked clean.
