The situation
An oversized gray sectional filling the bay-window corner of a San Mateo living room, with direct light across it for most of the day. Sunlight is the most honest lighting there is for upholstery — it picks up the sheen where oils have built up and the flattening of the pile in the seats. The owner had noticed it in the afternoons and not in the evenings, which is exactly what you would expect.
What we did
A big piece in strong light has to be cleaned evenly, because uneven work will be visible from across the room by three in the afternoon:
- Full dry vacuum including the deck and back. All cushions off, every seam and crevice, plus the back panel which sits against the window and collects dust.
- Colorfastness and sun-fade check. We looked for whether the sun-facing panels had already faded, because a faded panel will not match a cleaned one no matter what is done.
- Even pre-treatment across whole panels. Not spot by spot — on a piece this size, treating patches leaves visible boundaries.
- Hot water extraction in full-panel passes. Each panel completed start to finish before moving on, so there were no partial-dry edges.
- Pile groomed in one direction. On a large piece in direct light, pile direction is what makes the color read as consistent.
- Even airflow. Air movers placed so no section dried faster than another.
The result
The sheen came off the seat cushions and the pile stood back up, so the sectional stopped looking flattened in the middle and fresh at the edges. Because everything was done panel by panel rather than in patches, it reads as one consistent color in full afternoon sun — which is the only test that matters in that room.
