The situation
A navy sofa sitting directly in an open-plan Daly City kitchen and living space, a few steps from the range. Open-plan living has one drawback nobody mentions at the design stage: every time something is fried, a fine airborne film of cooking oil settles on the soft furnishings. It builds up slowly, it is invisible on dark fabric, and it is why a sofa near a kitchen feels faintly tacky long before it looks dirty.
What we did
Greasy film is a different problem from ordinary soil, and vacuuming does not touch it — it has to be emulsified:
- Dry vacuum first regardless. Crumbs, hair and grit still have to come out before anything wet is applied.
- Dye test on the navy. Deep blue holds a lot of dye and is worth testing before any degreaser goes near it.
- Degreasing pre-spray with real dwell time. The film needs chemistry and minutes, not pressure. This is the step that actually does the work.
- Hot water extraction at temperature. Heat is what makes an emulsified oil release from the fibre. This is one of the few jobs where water temperature genuinely changes the outcome.
- Thorough rinse pass. A degreaser left in fabric is sticky and attracts soil fast, so the rinse matters more here than on an ordinary clean.
- Full drying. Cushions on edge, air moving until completely dry.
The result
The tackiness went, which is the thing the owner actually noticed day to day, and the navy came back with proper depth rather than a slightly dull film over it. If your sofa is within a few steps of a range, it needs cleaning more often than the same sofa in a closed-off living room — every year rather than every eighteen months is a fair rule.
Sofa in an open-plan kitchen? If it feels slightly tacky to the touch, that is cooking residue and it comes out.
