The situation
A full gold-toned living room set — a large sofa, a matching ottoman and two recliners — in a home where the family clearly spends its evenings. The owner originally called about one recliner, the one that looked worst. That is a reasonable instinct and almost always the wrong call: clean one piece in a matching set and the other four suddenly look filthy by comparison. We priced the set instead.
What we did
A five-piece set is one continuous job rather than five small ones, which is exactly why it costs less per piece:
- Everything vacuumed before anything was wet. All five pieces, every seam, every crevice, including inside the recliner mechanisms where debris collects.
- Recliners opened and cleaned in position. A recliner has fabric that is only exposed when the footrest is extended, and it is always the dirtiest fabric on the chair. Cleaned closed, a recliner looks clean and is not.
- Floor fully protected. Tile and hardwood covered under all five pieces before any extraction started.
- Consistent chemistry across the set. The same products at the same dilution on every piece, so nothing came out a slightly different shade from its neighbor.
- Hot water extraction piece by piece. Overlapping passes with full vacuum recovery, moisture controlled so the foam never soaked.
- Dried together. Air movers run across the whole group so the set dried at the same rate.
The result
All five pieces came back to the same tone, which is the entire point of cleaning a set together. The recliners gained the most — the fabric under the extended footrest was several shades darker than the rest of the chair and it came out completely. The gold read warm again rather than muddy. Total time on site was about the same as cleaning two pieces separately on two different days.
Matching set? Clean it together. It costs less per piece and you avoid the problem of one bright chair surrounded by four tired ones.
