Large Area Rug Cleaning in San Francisco: Cleaned in Place, No Pickup

The situation

A large blue and cream patterned rug anchored the whole living room, and it was showing it. Spots had appeared in the middle of the field, and a dulled traffic path ran from the hallway to the sofa. The pattern was busy enough to hide the damage from across the room, but standing over it the difference was clear. The owner had been quoted a pickup service that meant losing the rug for a week and paying for transport both ways.

What we did

A rug this size does not need to leave the house. Cleaned in place, with the floor underneath protected, the result is the same and the rug is back in use the same day:

• Floor protection first. Waterproof sheeting was laid under the full footprint of the rug so the hardwood underneath stayed completely dry.
• The sectional moved and cleaned too. The cream sectional was pulled off the rug, stripped of cushions and deep cleaned in the same visit so nothing had to be done twice.
• Dry soil extraction. The rug was vacuumed thoroughly on both sides — a woven rug holds an enormous amount of dry grit deep in the pile, and pulling that out first is what makes the wet clean work.
• Spot testing and pre-treatment. Each visible spot was identified and treated individually, and the traffic path was pre-sprayed and given dwell time.
• Controlled hot water extraction. Slow overlapping passes with strong vacuum recovery, so the rug was rinsed properly without the backing ever getting saturated.
• Pile groomed and dried. The pile was set in one direction and air movers were run until the rug was dry to the touch.

The result

The spots lifted, the traffic path disappeared and the blue came back with real contrast against the cream — the pattern reads as a pattern again instead of a blur. Because the sectional was cleaned in the same visit, the whole room matched rather than having a bright rug sitting under a tired-looking sofa. Total time on site was under four hours, and nothing left the apartment.
