The situation
A deep green sectional on hardwood in a Palo Alto living room — a big piece, strong saturated color, and the kind of sofa that defines the room it sits in. The seat cushions had gone flat and slightly dulled compared with the back. Strongly dyed fabric is where cleaning goes wrong most often, because saturated color means a lot of dye in the fibre and more of it available to move.
What we did
On a piece like this the testing is not a formality, it is the job:
- Dye test in a hidden area, on a white towel. Pressed, held, checked. Any color transfer at all and the whole method changes.
- pH checked against the fabric. High-alkaline products strip dye from saturated fabric. What works on a beige sofa can visibly lighten a deep green one.
- Full dry vacuum before moisture. Cushions off, seams and crevices detailed.
- Pre-treatment kept to contact points. Seats, arms and headrest areas rather than the whole piece, to limit total chemistry on the fabric.
- Controlled hot water extraction. Enough rinse to lift the soil and pull the chemistry back out — leaving residue in colored fabric is what makes it re-soil quickly and look worse in three weeks than before.
- Pile groomed and dried evenly. Panel by panel, no partial-dry boundaries.
The result
No dye movement, no lightening, and the green came back saturated instead of dulled. The seat cushions recovered their depth once the pile was lifted and groomed. The detail that matters most here is the rinse: a colored sofa cleaned with residue left in it will look acceptable for a fortnight and then attract soil faster than it did before.
Strongly colored sofa? Ask whether a dye test is done before the work starts. If the answer is vague, keep calling.
