The situation

A living room in Mill Valley built around a deep blue velvet set — a sofa plus matching recliners, the pieces the whole family actually uses every evening. • Protect the floor, open the pieces up. Sheeting down first, then each recliner opened so the footrest and the fabric behind it could be reached — those are the areas that never get cleaned and hold the most.
• Dry vacuum every surface and seam. Velvet traps a remarkable amount in the pile and along the piping.
• Colorfastness test. Non-negotiable on dark dyes. Tested hidden first, then chemistry chosen.
• Low-moisture pre-treatment. Applied evenly across the whole set so both the sofa and the recliners came out to the same tone — a matching set has to be cleaned as one unit.
• Controlled hot water extraction. Heat does the lifting, moisture stays tight, extraction is thorough. Around the mechanisms we worked deliberately dry to keep water off the metal.
• Pile grooming and airflow. Nap set in one direction so the blue reads deep and even rather than patchy, dry in 6 to 8 hours.

The result

Even, deep blue across the sofa and both recliners — no rings, no crushed patches, no lighter spot where one piece got treated differently. The fabric behind the footrests came out noticeably cleaner than the rest, which is always the case and always a surprise to the owner.
