BeforeAfter
In short: Bedrooms in a San Carlos home where the carpet had gone noticeably darker along the routes between door, bed and closet. Hot water extraction evened the colour out across the whole floor in a single visit.
Two bedrooms with light grey carpet. In both of them the floor read as two different colours: pale under the bed and along the walls, distinctly darker in a band running from the door, down the side of the bed, to the closet.
This is the most common thing we are called about and the most commonly misread. Owners assume the carpet has worn. In a bedroom, where nobody wears shoes, it is almost always body oils and fine dust bonded into the pile — and that lifts out.
In the after photo, taken from the same doorway, the band along the bed has disappeared and the floor reads as one colour. The grooming lines show how the pile stands after the soil has come out of its base.
Both bedrooms took about two and a half hours. Dry enough to use that night.
Foot traffic grinds skin oils and airborne dust into the base of the pile, where it coats the fibre and absorbs light. The carpet is not worn and not stained — it is coated. Hot water extraction removes the coating and the colour returns.
Yes. We clean around and under what can be moved safely, and put foam blocks under furniture legs that stay in place so wood and metal do not mark damp carpet.
Every 12 to 18 months for most households. Sooner with pets, allergies, or if anyone in the house has asthma, since the carpet holds the dust that would otherwise circulate in the room.
A darker path worn into your bedroom carpet? It is soil, not wear.
