The situation
A set of cream upholstered pieces — two armchairs, a wingback and a square ottoman — plus two large area rugs in adjoining rooms.
The chairs were in reasonable shape. The ottoman was not, and it rarely is. An ottoman is the only piece of furniture in a living room that is sat on, walked past, used as a table and rested on by feet that have been outside. It takes more kinds of soil than anything else in the room and it is almost never the piece people ask about.
What we did
- Ottoman first, on its own. Pulled away from the set and cleaned separately with a longer pre-treatment, so the solution has time to break down what is on the top surface before extraction.
- Chairs panel to seam. Each chair finished edge to edge, with skirts and outside backs included.
- Rugs cleaned in place. Floor protected underneath, cleaned, then groomed in the direction of the pile.
- Everything dried standing. Cushions on end, ottoman raised off the floor so air reaches all faces.
The result
The ottoman came back to the same tone as the chairs it sits with, which it was not when we arrived. The two rugs came up enough that the pattern in the larger one reads properly again.

What is the dirtiest piece of furniture in a living room?
Usually the ottoman or footstool. It collects foot soil, food, drink spills and hand oils all at once, and it has a large flat top surface that takes everything. Most customers book the sofa and forget the ottoman.
Can you clean upholstered furniture and rugs in the same visit?
Yes, and it is the better way to do it. The equipment, water and drying gear are already in place, so the cost per piece is lower than booking separately, and everything in the room finishes at the same level.
How long before we can use the room again?
Upholstery is dry to the touch in four to six hours with air movement. Rugs take eight to twelve. A room cleaned during the day is normally back in use the same evening, with the rug fully dry by morning.
