Armchair Cleaning in Daly City: Small Pieces, Same Full Process

The situation

Two olive armchairs and a burgundy accent chair in a bright Daly City living room with original crown molding and hardwood floors. The olive chairs were the ones people actually sat in, and the contact points showed it — the arms had gone shiny and the seat fronts had darkened. What we did

A chair is not a scaled-down sofa. It has proportionally far more edges, seams and awkward angles, and almost all of the work is hand work:

• Vacuumed into every seam. A chair has more linear feet of seam per square foot of fabric than any other upholstered piece.
• Colorfastness tested on each chair. Olive and burgundy are different dye systems and were tested separately.
• Arms and seat fronts pre-treated. The shine on the arms is compressed body oil and it needs dwell time, not scrubbing — scrubbing just polishes it further.
• Hand tool throughout. No full-size wand fits the curves of a chair back or the inside of an arm. Every pass was done with an upholstery hand tool.
• Skirts and legs detailed. The lowest six inches of a chair collect vacuum-cleaner scuffs and shoe marks and are skipped constantly.
• Dried individually. Each chair given its own airflow so nothing sat damp in a corner.

The result

The shine came off the olive arms and the seat fronts went back to matching the rest of the fabric. The burgundy chair got a light clean at a lower price because it genuinely needed less. Worth knowing when you compare quotes: an armchair often costs more per square foot than a sofa, because the time is in the edges and a chair is almost all edges.
