The situation
A Palo Alto apartment with light beige carpet through the living room and hallway. From a standing position it looked passable. From floor level, in the light coming off the patio door, it told the truth: the pile was matted flat along the walking route, there were scattered darker spots, and the whole floor had that dusty flatness light carpet gets when it has been walked on for a couple of years without a proper clean.
What we did
Rental and apartment carpet has one specific requirement: it has to look genuinely clean, because someone is going to inspect it closely. That means edge-to-edge, not just the middle of the room.
- Full dry vacuum first. Including the perimeter and the edges along the baseboards, which is exactly where inspections start.
- Spot treatment. The darker marks were treated individually before the general pre-spray, since different spots need different chemistry.
- Even pre-spray across the whole floor. On light carpet, treating one patch harder than the rest leaves a visibly cleaner square — so the whole area gets the same treatment.
- Hot water extraction, overlapping and straight. Heat and rinse in, soil straight back out, with controlled moisture so the carpet dries fast in an apartment with limited airflow.
- Grooming. The pile brushed up and set in one direction. This is what produces the clean, even lines you can see in the photos — and it is also what makes flattened carpet stand up again.
The result
The matting lifted, the spots came out, and the floor went back to a single even tone with the pile standing up. The grooming lines across the living room are the visual giveaway that the carpet was actually extracted rather than surface-cleaned. Dry in 6 to 8 hours, which matters in an apartment where you cannot open the whole house up.
